Mortar

Mortar mix ratio for repointing

Repointing older, soft masonry uses a weak, lime-rich Type O mortar so the joints, not the bricks, take any future movement.

Recommended mix

1 : 2 : 9portland cement : hydrated lime : sand

Type O mortar — about 350 psi (2.4 MPa).

Planning reference. Typical proportions and strength for general work, not a structural mix design. Load-bearing and structural work must follow your local building code and a qualified engineer's specification.

Why this mix

A low-strength mortar (min 350 psi) for interior non-load-bearing walls and for re-pointing soft historic brick where a hard mortar would cause damage.

Once you know the mix, the volume calculators tell you how much of it to buy — cubic yards, cubic metres and the bag count in every size.
