Mortar

Mortar mix ratio for concrete block

Concrete block, especially exterior or load-bearing, is usually laid in the stronger Type S mortar for better bond and compressive strength.

Recommended mix

1 : 0.5 : 4.5portland cement : hydrated lime : sand

Type S mortar — about 1,800 psi (12.4 MPa).

Planning reference. Typical proportions and strength for general work, not a structural mix design. Load-bearing and structural work must follow your local building code and a qualified engineer's specification.

Why this mix

A strong, versatile mortar (min 1,800 psi) with good bond and workability. The usual choice for exterior walls at or below grade and for structural brick/block.

Once you know the mix, the volume calculators tell you how much of it to buy — cubic yards, cubic metres and the bag count in every size.
